The origin of Robert Schumann’s Opus 68 can be traced back to a group of only six small piano pieces, very probably written in August 1848 as a birthday present for his young daughter Marie. Nevertheless, that brief cyclic organization turned out to be only the seed of a large cycle that would comprise 40 pieces, which Schumann considered publishing with the title A Christmas Album. Later, with the incorporation of other three pieces, the work would acquire its definitive form and title: Album for the Young.
